The original curia, Curia Hostilia, was named after Tullus Hostillius and 300 senators met to discuss state affairs. The building was enlarged in 80 BC by Sulla, but in 52 BC it burned to the ground during gang warfare between Julius Caesar and Pompey. Gang Leaders were Milo and Clodius.
The existing building, Curia Julius, was built by Julius Caesar. It was built for 1000 senators to meet and discuss affairs of the state.

What are it main features?
The outer exterior was made from brick-faced concrete with a single flight of stairs leading up to the bronze door. The original appearance which shows the veranda held up by columns on the front wall of the building of the Senate House is known from an Augustan/Octavian Denarius of 28BC. The interior of the walls have been stripped but were originally veneered in marble 2/3 of the way up. Two main features that are found in the interior are the “Altar of Victory” and its striking floor.
