Forum Romanum
The Forum Romanum stands in the area between Capitoline Hill and Palatine Hill. Stratigraphic evidence suggests the area was originally marketplace, however, over time, the Forum Romanum became the centre of public life. It was the hub of economic and political affairs; the place where public speeches and criminal trials took place; triumphal processions and religious festivals took place in the forum.
Via Sacra
The Via Sacra ('Sacred Way') is the main road and widest street of the Forum Romanum ('Rome Forum').
The Via Sacra plays an important part in Rome's history, as it is the setting of many events, such as religious festivals, the triumphs of generals and daily business in the Basilicas, including games, social meetings, business and justice.
Task #4
1. Read Horace's story of a meeting with a stranger along the Via Sacra. What happens in this story? What does it tell us about the Via Sacra and buildings along it?
2. How was the Via Sacra constructed?
3. What is the significance of the Forum Romanum in Rome's history? Describe in detail some of the events that took place in the Forum Romanum.
